Administrative/Biographical history:

The Bouverie Street Society (renamed the Bouverie Society in 1889) was established in 1801 at the Queen's Head tavern, Holborn, as a dining and debating society for master pawnbrokers. It was dissolved in 1948, owing to lack of support, when its property was sold and the proceeds transferred to the Pawnbrokers' Charitable Institution.

Records of the Bouverie Society, a social club for pawnbrokers. The records comprise: rules, 1934 (Ms 22321); minutes, 1801-1948 (Ms 22322); visitors' book, 1935-45 (Ms 22323); miscellaneous papers, 1897-1914 (Ms 22324-5); and photograph albums, late 19th century-early 20th century (Ms 22326).

Immediate source of acquisition:

The surviving records of the society were deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library in 1987 with the archives of the National Pawnbrokers' Association. They were catalogued by a member of Guildhall Library staff in the same year. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
