Administrative/Biographical history:

The original Eastern Society of Master Pawnbrokers was established in 1813 at the Laurel Tree, Brick Lane, Spitalfields, in order to support its members against litigious prosecution. In 1822 the original society dissolved itself and was reformed as a friendly association, with revised rules and regulations. Its subsequent history is unknown.

Scope and content/abstract:

Eastern Society of Master Pawnbrokers records comprise: minutes 1813-21, 1824-31 (Ms 22327) and correspondence and other papers, 1821-30 (Ms 22328). They were catalogued by a member of Guildhall Library staff in 1987.

The archives of the society were deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library in 1987 together with the archives of the National Pawnbrokers' Association. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
