Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

The Institution was established in 1844 for the relief of 'distressed and decayed licensed Drovers'. In 1904 the Institution was amalgamated with the London Meat Traders' Association to form the London Meat Traders' and Drovers' Benevolent Association, but the Institution 'kept in being' during the period of the lease of Drovers' Hall and of Almshouses in Islington. The lease expired in 1953 when the Institution ceased to exist separately.

Records of the Drovers' Benevolent Institution comprise an account of the society, 1890 (Ms 36681) and committee minutes, 1905-53 (Ms 36680).

Immediate source of acquisition:

The records were deposited by the Butchers' and Drovers' Charitable Institution in 2005 and were catalogued by a member of Guildhall Library staff in the same year. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
