Administrative/Biographical history:

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children was founded on its Bloomsbury site in 1852, as the Hospital for Sick Children. It became part of the National Health Service in 1948.

Bound registers, kept in sequence in the archive storeroom.

Conditions governing access:

The bulk of the sub fonds is open, but Medical Committee files that contain details of identified patients or staff are closed.

Conditions governing reproduction:

Photocopies and digital photographs of the open material may be made in the archive reading room, although fragile material will be sent to the Hospital's Medical Illustration Department for copying. There is a charge for these services.

Finding aids:

A catalogue, in typescipt and on the hospital computer, in available for consultation in the archive office.

Archival history:

The records were created by the various committees of the hospital, retained and organised by the Hospital Secretary and Management Offices, and passed to the archive when no longer immediately relevant.

Immediate source of acquisition:

Hospital Secretary until 1948, then Management Board.
