Administrative/Biographical history:

The Institute of Bankers was founded in 1879 and gained a Royal Charter in 1987. In 1997 the name was changed to the Institute of Financial Services. The Institute provides professional qualifications, training and licences to practice to those working in the financial sector.

The Institute had premises at 11 and 12 Clements Lane, 1879-84; St Michael's House Cornhill, 1884-91; 34 Clements Lane, 1891-1923; 5 Bishopsgate, 1923-1937; 11 Birchin Lane, 1937-1951; 10 Lombard Street, 1951-1996.

Scope and content/abstract:

Records of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, comprising constitutional documents, minutes, correspondence (notably about International Banking summer schools), and photographs. Access to post 1980 material is restricted. The records are held off-site and require 24 hours notice for access.

Immediate source of acquisition:

Mss 30850-62A were deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library by the Chartered Institute of Bankers on 3rd October 1995. Mss 36588-96 were donated in 2005 (together with some printed books and prints which were passed to the Printed Books and Prints & Maps Sections of Guildhall Library). The Charter was not deposited neither were any financial or examinations records. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
