Administrative/Biographical history:

This company was established as the World Marine Insurance Company in 1894, at 21 Finch Lane, for the business of marine, fire and accident insurance in London. It changed its name in 1914 by which time its offices were at 3-4 Royal Exchange Buildings. It became a subsidiary of Northern Assurance Company in 1920 which in turn merged with Commercial Union in 1968.

Records of the World Marine and General Insurance Company Limited, comprising minutes of annual general meetings, Board meetings and the London Committee. The records are held off-site and require 24 hours notice for access.

Commercial Union Assurance deposited the minute books of World Marine and General Insurance Company in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library in 1969. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
