Administrative/Biographical history:

The company was established in 1849, in offices at 3 Old Broad Street, for the insurance of railway passengers. It expanded this business after 1856 to include general accident insurance in the United Kingdom and South Africa. In 1910, at which date its address was 64 Cornhill, it became a subsidiary of the North British and Mercantile Insurance Company which in turn became a subsidiary of Commercial Union Assurance in 1959.

Records of the Railway Passengers Assurance Company, including Board minutes, deeds of settlement, Committee minutes and general meeting minutes.

Commercial Union deposited the records of Railway Passengers Assurance Company in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library in 1969, except for the minute book of general meetings which it deposited in 1976. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
