Administrative/Biographical history:

The bank was established in 1899 as the Anglo-African Bank Limited and changed its name in 1905 to the Bank of Nigeria Limited. It was an overseas bank, operating in Nigeria and the French Ivory Coast. Its head office was in Norfolk Street, Strand. It was taken over by the Bank of British West Africa in 1912.

Not all of the records listed in L S Pressnell and J Orbell, Guide to the Records of British Banking (1985) were included in this deposit.

Immediate source of acquisition:

The records held by Guildhall Library were deposited in the Manuscripts Section by Standard Chartered Bank in August 1989. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
