Sir John Buckworth was a leading merchant, trading with Turkey. The property referred to in this collection comprises four capital messuages variously known as Augustine Fryers, Winchester Place or House, St John House, the Excise House and the Glasshouse, and a number of adjacent messuages, all formerly part of, or on part of the site of, the dissolved Augustine Friary.

These papers relate to the property of Sir John Buckworth and his family. They comprise deeds and related papers concerning property in or near Great Winchester Street within the parishes of All Hallows London Wall and St Peter le Poer.

They were deposited in Guildhall Library in 1982 by Mr G C Shakerley, whose ancestors were connected with some or all of the properties, and were catalogued in the same year (revised in 1995) by members of Guildhall Library staff. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
