Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

The lands were originally purchased by Peter Mellish, who bequeathed them to William Mellish. His daughter married Richard, Earl of Glengall, and their daughter married the Hon. Richard Charteris, second son of the 9th Earl of Wemyss. In addition to the property in the Isle of Dogs and Woodford, there are the Glengall estates in Cahir, Ireland. Although deeds to these estates are listed in the Schedule of Deeds in this collection, none of the documents have been deposited.

Content

Scope and content/abstract:

This collection refers to estates in the Isle of Dogs (Poplar) and Woodford, owned by the Mellish, Glengall and Charteris families. The records consists of the title deeds to the properties, leases of the properties, and financial and legal records arising from the administration of trusts to provide income from the properties for members of the Charteris family, chiefly Lady Margaret Charteris and Edmund Butler Charteris.

Access & Use

Language/scripts of material:
English

System of arrangement:

The documents were originally kept in a series of deed boxes at Messrs Coutts and Co. The Schedule of Deeds (Acc/2636/193) lists the contents of each deed box, and shows later alterations to this arrangement. The boxes contained numbered bundles of documents, each relating to a particular property. This original arrangement has been retained in the list. Later documents were not arranged in bundles but entered under the heading 'Existing leases'. These have been arranged by property or street, whenever possible, or lasted as shown in the Schedule where no street name can be identified. The Schedule gives the contents of each bundle in some detail. It also contains information on other property included in Marriage Settlements and Trusts, and a list of important dates in the family history.
