Administrative/Biographical history:

Field and Sons, Auctioneers and Surveyors was established in 1802 in Southwark. In 1890s and 1900s the firm described themselves as 'Auctioneers, Surveyors, Land and Estate Agents'. Charles R Field was a partner during the 1900s-1910s and personally dealt with matters relating to clients including Borough Market Trust for which he was also a Trustee. The firm passed out of the family's hands in 1999 after being managed by six generations of the Field Family.

Premises: in Southwark (1802-1880); 54 Borough High Street, Southwark (from 1880). The firm also had a further office successively at 17 Tokenhouse Yard, City of London (1907) 52 Chancery Lane; and 5 Waterloo Place, Westminster (1910s).

Scope and content/abstract:

Records of Field and Sons including client case files and papers kept by Charles R Field, partner concerning client Borough Market Trust. Mainly comprises circular agendas for Trustee meetings, financial accounts, correspondence about property purchases and insurance. These records were formerly held in one deed tin box.

The main business archive including ledgers and valuation books is held by Southwark Local History Library and Archive.

The Field Family also gave relevant antique prints of St.Saviours to Southwark Cathedral; and a King James I Bible with editorial notes by the then Rector of St George the Martyr was given to the parish.
