Administrative/Biographical history:

The University of London Contingent of the Officer's Training Corps is administered by the Military Education Committee. The OTC was created in 1909 by R B Haldane as part of the army reforms he effected as Secretary of State for War.

The role of the OTC is to train undergraduates for commissioned service in the regular army, the Territorial Army and Combined Cadet Force. The Corps is an integral part of the Territorial Army.

The Contingent is organised into sub units of the following armed services: Royal Artillery, Royal Engineers, Royal Signals, Infantry, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Intelligence Corp and Women's Royal Army Corp.


Scope and content/abstract:

The collection comprises minutes and meeting papers for the Military Education Committee and its sub-Committees and for meetings of the Conference of Representatives of the Universities and Colleges providing contingents for the OTC and the Military Boards of London, Oxford and Cambridge Universities; enrolment forms and index cards with details of members of the OTC (SOME ARE CLOSED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE DATA PROTECTION ACT); Military Education Committee annual reports; correspondence with various organisations including the War Office, the University Air Squadron and Wycombe Council regarding Great Kimble Camp; copies of OTC contingent orders; Rolls of the Fallen and of War Service; photographs; administrative papers and publicity items including notices of lectures and a scrapbook containing press cuttings, information leaflets and official programmes.

Copies may be made, subject to the condition of the original. Copying must be undertaken by the Special Collections Reading Room staff, who will need a minimum of 24 hours to process requests.
