Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

The Republic of Venice was created around 1140. It was headed by the Doge, and led by the Great Council, who controlled all political and administrative business. Ludovico Manin, the last doge, was deposed by Napoléon Bonaparte on May 12, 1797. A provisional democratic municipality was set up in place of the republican government, but later in the same year Venice was handed over to Austria.

Archival history:

The manuscripts contain the bookplate of Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guildford (d 1827), and were later part of the library of Sir Thomas Phillipps, 1st Baronet (1792-1872) as MSS 5570-2.

Immediate source of acquisition:

Part of the Goldsmith's Library of Economic Literature, initially collected by Herbert Somerton Foxwell and presented by the Goldsmith's Company to the University of London in 1903.
