Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

There is little information on JG Wallace, the author of these works, apart from a note of his appointments in the Overseas Civil Service in one of the files. He was assigned to the Northern Region of Nigeria in 1954, and after passing examinations, was appointed as a member of HM Overseas Civil Service in 1956. In that year he was made a Grade III Magistrate and posted to Nasarawa Division, then became an Administrative Officer Class IV in 1957. In 1958 he was posted in charge of Wukari Division, then of Lafia Division. The two works were originally intended as two volumes of one work. However, the volume on legislation was completed more readily than that on Benue Province; therefore Wallace intended to publish it separately. There is no evidence that either work progressed beyond the state in which the drafts and notes were found.

Rough draft of a history by J G Wallace of British Law in Northern Nigeria, 1948-1959; research papers and partial drafts of a history of Benue Province, Nigeria, c1959. The latter include copies of works by others, and of official administrative correspondence and reports, c1928-1959.

Papers for the two works have been treated as separate series. The drafts for the history of British Law in Northern Nigeria have been retained in original folders or files for each chapter or group of chapters, and arranged in the intended order according to a plan of the work and a draft contents list. The papers for the history of Benue were in one large bundle and the order within this has been retained, with each folder or item being described as separate components.

Open although advance notice should be given. Access to individual items may be restricted under the Data Protection Act or the Freedom of Information Act.

A photocopying service is available, at the discretion of the Library staff. Copies are supplied solely for research or private study. Requests to publish, or to quote from original material should be submitted to the Information Resources Manager.
