Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

Spanish was taught at King's College from 1831, initially as a course in the Department of General Literature and Science, then as a Faculty of Arts course from 1893 until 1923-1924, when it became recognised in its own right as the Spanish Studies Department. In 1973 the department changed its title to the Spanish and Spanish-American Studies Department in recognition of a broadening Latin American syllabus, and has been part of the School of Humanities since 1989.

Scope and content/abstract:

King's College London Spanish and Spanish-American Studies Department records comprising correspondence with staff and students, departmental minutes, University of London Board of Studies' papers, papers relating to the University Grants' Committee, course outlines, mark sheets and photographs, 1949-1992. These notably include departmental minutes, 1975-1989; correspondence relating to research funding, lecture programmes, sabbaticals, the teaching of Spanish in United Kingdom universities, staff references, publishing agreements, the merger of 1985, course outlines and structure, [1960-1990]; minutes of the University of London Board of Studies in Romance Language and Literature, 1972-1992; minutes and correspondence relating to the University Grants' Committee collected by Leonard Patrick Harvey, Cervantes Professor of Spanish, King's College London, 1980-1982; correspondence concerning Si Titulo, the departmental newsletter, with copies, 1980-1986; photographs of students and staff, the Spanish Society and various social events, 1948-1992.

Conditions governing access:

Administrative records are generally closed for 30 years except for published material and some committee and other minutes. Student and staff records are subject to an 80 year closure period after the date of leaving, but may be consulted by Departmental and other College staff with permission from the Head of Department.

Copies, subject to the condition of the original, may be supplied for research use only. Requests to publish original material should be submitted to the Director of Archive Services.
