Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

The Southern Rhodesia African National Congress was founded in 1957 under the leadership of Joshua Nkomo. It was banned by the Government in 1959, and several prominent members were arrested and detained. The detainees were released early in 1961. Their claim for compensation does not appear to have been successful.

Scope and content/abstract:

Memorandum by M D Matimba, M T Musarurwa, P P A Foya, E F C Sithole, K S Mhizha, J T Maululeke, and T A Chihota, (former political detainees), to Minister of Justice, Southern Rhodesia, 16 July 1961, concerning payment of allowances, the need for improvement of the 'shockingly insulting' conditions in which they were living, and the expulsion of the Native Commissioner, R S Powell.
