Born 1913; educated at Bradfield College, RMA Sandhurst and St John's College Cambridge; commissioned Royal Engineers, 1933; served with 14th Army, India and Burma, 1941-1945; commanded a column of the 77th Brigade on 1st Chindit Expedition, 1943; awarded DSO, 1943; acting Brig 1944; commanded 77th Brigade on 2nd Chindit Expedition, 1944; awarded Bar to DSO, 1944; commanded Special Air Service (SAS) Brigade, NW Europe, 1944-45; commanded Malayan Scouts (SAS Regiment), 1950-1951; court martialled and dismissed the Service, 1951. Writer and lecturer on guerrilla warfare and military history, 1952-1998; died 1998. Publications: Prisoners of Hope: The Campaign of the77th Infantry Brigade in Burma, 1944 (Jonathan Cape, London, 1952); Slim as a General (Pan Books, London, 1973).

Photographs taken by Brig (James) Michael Calvert on visits to Africa and South East Asia, 1971, comprising file of 56 photographs of visit to Rhodesia, 1971; file of 21 photographs of visit to South Vietnam, subjects include alarm posts, militia training, and the city of Dining; file of 29 photographs of visit to Guinea - Bissau, Nov 1971, mainly comprising photographs of captured Soviet weapons; file of 86 photographs of visit to Mozambique, Nov 1971, subjects include Portuguese troops in Porto Amelia and Nampula, street scenes in Nampula, press photographs of Samora Machel, President of the Frelimo guerrillas, and Jose Moyane, commander of the Frelimo forces in Tete Province; file of 21 photographs of visit to Angola, Nov 1971, subjects include Portuguese troops and street scenes in Luso.
