Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

The Anglo-Finnish Society was formed in 1911, but went into abeyance during theWorld War One. It was revived but went into abeyance once more during the World War Two, although aid to the Finnish Red Cross during its Winter War 1939-1940 with the Soviet Union was directed through the Society. It was then re-started in 1953. It is a non political body with the objective of fostering friendship and understanding between Britain and Finland.
William Richard Mead: b 1915; educated at Aylesbury Grammar School and the London School of Economics; served RAF 1940-1946; Lecturer in Geography, University of Liverpool, 1947-1949; Lecturer, Reader and Professor of Geography, University College London, 1950-1981; Chairman of Council, School of Slavonic and East European Studies, 1978-1980; Secretary, 1953-1965 and Chairman, 1966-, Anglo-Finnish Society.

Scope and content/abstract:

Papers of the Anglo-Finnish Society, 1939-1995, comprising:
Minutes of Council, and general meetings of the society, annual reports, financial statements and copies of letters sent to members; membership correspondence, 1953-1965, mainly between the secretary of the Society, Prof W R Mead and members concerning membership of the Society and Society activities and events, also includes membership lists and notes on the foundation of the Society in 1911 and its revival after the Second World War, 1953; financial correspondence and account books, 1939-1940, 1954-1980; correspondence of Prof W R Mead, 1939-1989, including notes and correspondence on the revival of the Society, and on changes in office holders; correspondence and papers on the revival of the Society, 1949-1958; papers on annual dinners, other special dinners, luncheons, entertainments and other activities held by the Society, 1954-1995.
