Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

Courses in English Literature and History were provided in the Senior Department at King's College from 1831 and shortly afterwards became part of the Department of General Literature and Science. English and History were separated in 1855, when classes in English Language and Literature became available. A Department of English was formed in 1922/23, remaining part of the Faculty of Arts until the School of Humanities was created in 1989.

Information typically contained in undergraduate record cards includes name, year of entry, date of birth, year of graduation, permanent address, term time address, schools, courses, exam results, alternative courses, special subjects, activities and interests, postgraduate work and subsequent career. From 1967 onwards they also include tutor reports for all three terms for the duration of the degree. Information typically contained on postgraduate record cards includes name, date of birth, year of entry, degree and date of award, term and permanent address, name of supervisor, full-time or part-time, source of finance, activities and interests, title of thesis and remarks. Information on subsidiary student record cards includes date of birth, photo, addresses, tutors' reports and grades. Information on Special Course student record cards includes name of English course and name of main department/college. This series also includes withdrawals. The non-award series comprises EEC, Nursing and Occasional students. The information contained on these record cards includes date of birth, addresses, home university, dates of attendance, photo, subjects taken, tutors' term reports.

System of arrangement:

Undergraduates are organised by year of entry from 1943-1977, then alphabetically within each year. From 1981 onwards they are organised by year of graduation, then alphabetically within each year. Postgraduates are organised by year of entry, from 1966-73, then sorted alphabetically. Thereafter they are organised by year of leaving. Subsidiary, Junior Year Abroad and Penn students are organised by year of entry, then listed alphabetically. Later additions to the series are organised temporarily according to the year in which they were deposited in the Archives.

Conditions governing access:

Subject to an eighty year closure period from date of leaving, but may be consulted by Departmental and other College staff with permission from the Head of Department.

Conditions governing reproduction:

Copies, subject to the condition of the original, can be supplied to Departmental staff. Requests to publish original material should be submitted to the Director of Archive Services, King's College London.
