Administrative/Biographical history:

Ludford Harvey was born on 20 September 1759, into a family of landowners of Malin Hall in County Donegal, Ireland. He was was educated first in Londonderry, and then at an Academy in Lothbury. He was apprenticed to Percivall Pott, surgeon to Bartholmew's Hospital in 1777 at the age of 17, and completed his apprenticeship in 1782. He was surgeon to St Bartholomew's Hospital from 1807 to 1824, and was Vice-President of the College of Surgeons.

Papers of Sir Ludford Harvey, comprising his journal, [1804-1826], containing personal and family accounts, [1804-1812]; inventory of furniture, 1806; autobiography for 1759-1821; accounts of Surgeon's Fund, 1807-1814; lists of surgical students at St Bartholomew's Hospital, 1807-1814; journal of memorandums and events at St Bartholomew's Hospital, 1807-1823; photograph of George Ludford Harvey.

Photocopying is not permitted. However, single sheets dated after 1850 may be photocopied at the discretion of the Archivist. Photographs of items are obtainable, subject to copyright regulations, from the Department of Medical Illustration at St Bartholomew's Hospital. Arrangements can be made via the Archivist. Outside photographers and researchers' own cameras are not permitted.
