Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

Bolton Glanville Corney was born 10 December 1851; educated privately in France, England and Germany and eventually at St Thomas' Hospital. In 1876 he travelled to the new Crown Colony in Fiji and was appointed Chief Medical Officer of Fuji in 1887. Corney reported upon the decrease in the Fijian native population and wrote papers concerning Dengue Fever and Leprosy etc. Corney joined the Royal Geographical Society in 1912, served on its council and was awarded the Back Grant in 1923. He died in 1924.

Scope and content/abstract:

Papers of Bolton Glanville Corney, 1903-1924, comprise manuscripts and corrected proofs for volumes edited by Corney for the Hakluyt Society; unpublished, edited transcripts of documents and articles including 'Sidelights on Captain Cook's call at Rio de Janeiro in HMS Endeavour' , 'The narrative of Te-ehe-te-Atua-o-noa', 'The career of the Harrington snow', notebook containing a Fijian vocabulary for medical officers; notes copied from a variety of sources relating to islands inlcuding Easter Island and the Falkland Islands.

Accessed via the Foyle Reading Room. Free of charge for Fellows, Members and those with valid academic identification. All other users pay a charge and must bring identification in order to register on arrival.
