Born, 1823; Trinity College, Cambridge, 1840; embarked on travels, 1842, chiefly through Abyssinia and the Sudan; lived with the nomadic Kababish tribe as they roamed in the area around al-'Ubayd in the Sudan, 1846-1847; returned to England, 1849; Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (RGS), 1849-1894; Assistant Secretary to the British embassy, Constantinople, 1850-1851; served on the RGS council, 1854; Comptroller of the Bankruptcy Court, 1864-1884; died, 1894.

Publications: Life in Abyssinia 2 vols, (1853), 2nd edition (1868)

Scope and content/abstract:

Papers of Mansfield Parkyns comprising papers relating to Abyssinia and the Sudan: (a) Notes on the history of Nubia, notes on Kordofan, notes on Tagulla and on the Noubas; portion of a journal kept while in Abyssinia, and (b) Five fasciculi in Italian, of a history of the Sudan (author unidentified), together with a partial translation by Richard Hill. (See R. Hill, Egypt in the Sudan). (c) MS. In French (author unidentified). (d) Loose pages of notes in English and Arabic. Accompanied by some correspondence of 1938 and 1946 about the papers.
