Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

The Maudsley Hospital Medical School was opened in 1923. It was associated to the Maudsley Hospital, which was established in 1914 to treat the mentally ill. It was officially recognised by the University of London in [1933]. In 1948 it became a founder member of the newly formed British Postgraduate Medical Federation and changed its name to the Institute of Psychiatry. Maudsley Hospital amalgamated with the Bethlem Royal Hospital to form a joint teaching hospital in 1948. The Institute of Psychiatry became a school of King's College London in 1997.

The Dean of the Institute of Psychiatry provides academic and strategic leadership and is supported by the Institute Secretary, who is responsible for the day to day management of the Institute.

Papers of the Dean of the Institute of Psychiatry, 1991-2004, including correspondence on appointments; papers on Institute of Psychiatry units and centres including on the setting up of the Molecular Genetics Unit, 1996, the setting up of the Research Centre for the Molecular Basis of Behaviour, 1999, staffing, meetings and grants for the Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre, 1999-2002 and on staffing and equipment for the Affective Disorders Unit, 2001. Papers relating to working parties including the Psychiatry Working Party, 1997, the Research Assessment Working Party, 1996, and the Clinical Psychology Working party, 1994-1995. Reports including research reports, 1995-1998 and Institute of Psychiatry Annual Report, 1995. Minutes of meetings including the Social Psychiatry Sub Group and the Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre. Internal Education Audit, 1999 and papers relating to fundraising and budgeting including appeals, 1996-1997 and Institute of Psychiatry financial reports.
