Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

The Organisation originated as the International Society of Gastroenterology, founded at the First International Congress of Gasteroenterology in Brussels, 1935; the Society was reconstituted as the Organisation Mondiale de Gastroentérologie or World Organisation of Gastroenterology at a joint meeting with various related American Societies in Washington DC, 1958.

Papers of the World Organisation of Gastroenterology, 1958-2000, comprising administrative records, 1958-1995; publications including congress reports, bulletins, newsletters and World Gastroenterology News, 1935, 1958-1995; photographs and long playing records.

The papers are available subject to the usual conditions of access to Archives and Manuscripts material, after the completion of a Reader's Undertaking.

Photocopies/photographs/microfilm are supplied for private research only at the Archivist's discretion. Please note that material may be unsuitable for copying on conservation grounds, and that photographs cannot be photocopied in any circumstances. Readers are restricted to 100 photocopies in twelve months. Researchers who wish to publish material must seek copyright permission from the copyright owner.

Immediate source of acquisition:

Papers were given to the Contemporary Medical Archives Centre by the Honorary President and archivist-historian of the Organisation, Professor Francisco Vilardell MD FRCP in 1995 and 1997. Audio-visual material relating to the 1958 International Congress, minutes, and copies of the journal were received in 2000.
