Administrative/Biographical history:

Bernhard Albinus was born in Dessau in 1653. The original family name was Weiss, but was Latinised to Albinus in c 1656. He was educated by a private tutor and then attended public school. He entered the University of Leiden in 1675 and got his degree (MD) in 1676. He was awarded a PhD, by the University of Frankfurt-an-der-Oder in 1681 and became Professor of Medicine there. He was also appointed court physician to the Elector of Brandenburg, Freidrich Wilhelm, and lived in Berlin. He became Professor of Theoretical and Practical Medicine at the University of Leiden from 1702 until his death in 1721.

Papers relating to Bernhard Albinus, c 1718-c 1720, comprising two volumes of manuscript Latin titled Collegii Practici Viri Celeberrimi Bernhardi Albini Dictata , c 1718; and Colleg: Practic: Viri Celeberrimi Bernhardi Albini Dictata, c 1720. Both containing student(s) notes from lectures given by Bernhard Albinus.

Immediate source of acquisition:

The volume dated c 1720 was probably obtained by Robert Rutson James in 1925. James' bookplate is in the inside front cover, and a note at the top of the first page says 'R R James, June 20 1925 from C O'. A note on this page explains that C O is Cecil Ogle, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, who died in 1931. The Library Donation book records the deposit of an 'Albinus MS' from R R James in 1931, which is likely to be this volume.

There is no such information in the volume dated c 1718.
